Anticipating and preparing for the palliative emergencies in home care results in better patient and family-centre care. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of potential emergencies helps providers determine the appropriate clinical interventions and better prepare and support patients and their caregivers.

This 5-part series focusing on home care-based palliative care emergencies. The series will cover the following topics which we’ve identified as the 5 B’s of Palliative Emergencies:

  • Breathing (Dyspnea)
  • Balance (Hypercalcemia)
  • Bleeding (Catastrophic hemorrhage)
  • Brain (Seizures)
  • Blockages (Super Vena Cava and Spinal Cord Compression)
